About Top 25 Shows
The Idea.
Top 25 Shows was the brainchild of Torrey Pitchford. The first chart was posted on Wednesday, March 2, 1994. When the very first chart was posted, “Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM)” serving as our #1 show. At its start the list was 15 positions in length.
Overall, 1994 was a relatively decent year in chart performance with “Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) leading the way with five career No. 1’s, “Beavis & Butthead” with four and “Nick Arcade” with three. “Sonic the Hedgehog” finished as Show of the Year on the 1994 Year-End Wrap-Up.
Animated Shows and the significance of Sonic the Hedgehog.
Animated shows has made up the overwhelming majority in Top 25 Shows since 1994. Sonic the Hedgehog is a near mascot to Top 25 Shows. Why? Because in 2003 he was named the most successful cartoon character in Top 25 Shows history. He would go on to chart again under the DiC imprint with “Sonic Underground”, that show posted the biggest one-month gain in Top 25 Shows history on the December 1999 chart, blasting 23-1. The number of positions gained (22) is also a record. Then Sonic went anime with “Sonic X”. The show not only became the first anime to debut at #1, but the first to do it on an original list.
Japanese animes.
Japanese animes are another variety of animated shows to chart. The first anime to chart was “Swiss Family Robinson (INSP)” in 1995. It had moderate success, peaking at No. 10. Since 1995, more than two dozen animes have charted. The most successful was “Digimon: Digital Monsters”.
By far the biggest year for animes is 2003 when ten of our 26 animes debuted and charted. To see the entire list of animes, click here. It shows how long the show was on the chart, and its highest position in Top 25 Shows.
“Digimon: Digital Monsters” debuted at No. 6 in September 1999. It went to run for four seasons. It went on to stay in the top 10 for 36 months straight, a record. It also posted eight career No. 1’s in Top 25 Shows, a record for an anime. It’s also grossed more than 14 billion grosses, making it the biggest grossing anime of all-time.
Top 10 Shows of the Week.
Top 10 Shows of the Week was a weekly version of Top 25 Shows. It is now a shows main means for credit towards next month. The first Top 10 Shows of the Week chart that is official was posted on July 17, 1999 with Nelvana-imprint show “Franklin” at the #1 helm. Since then we have posted more than 250 charts, and many records have been broken.
“Timothy Goes To School”, another Nelvana-imprint show, is the all-time leader in career and consecutive No. 1’s in Top 10 Shows of the Week with 38 and 30, respectively.
Storybook Shows.
1998 started the revolution of storybook shows, mainly from the Nelvana-imprint. It all started with “Babar” that same year. It picked up three career No. 1’s in T25S and was 1998’s Show of the Year.
1999 saw “Franklin”, another storybook show, go to No. 1 for four months and finish the year as Show of the Year.
2000 saw a slight break with one of the biggest battles for Show of the Year in Top 25 Shows history looming between “Digimon” and “Dragon Tales”. In the end, it was “Digimon” that came out on top and became the first (and only) anime to be Show of the Year.
2001 saw a strong return for the Nelvana-imprint as “Timothy Goes To School” broke nearly every one of our most important records. “Timothy Goes To School” went on to be Show of the Year in 2001, and is now considered, in general, the greatest show in Top 25 Shows history. 2001 also turned to be Nelvana's biggest year in Top 25 Shows. Eight shows from that imprint managed to finish on the 2001 Year-End Wrap-Up (four in the top-10), more than any other imprint in a single year!
2002 and 2003 saw the animated series to the “Redwall” books by Brian Jacques become the first show to become Show of the Year twice in both the years previously mentioned. “Redwall” is currently the all-time leader in grosses and career No. 1’s in Top 25 Shows with more than 28 billion grosses and 12 career No. 1’s to its name!

Well, I’ve just about mentioned everything about Top 25 Shows without revealing too much. This website is not too flashy, but it will do for now. I will work to keep up it up-to-date. Enjoy!
